"Fender has unquestionably produced some unattractive finishes over the years. The Antigua series comes to mind. The stomach-churning earth tones of '70s Strats are sure to trigger your gag reflex. Not to be outdone, however, Gibson offered their competitor with the venerable “Silverburst.” If the Tin Man started a Kiss tribute band, this is what he would play. But every so often, a creation will grow so ugly that it begins to appear attractive again. It’s why people buy pugs, and why the same people buy Silverbursts.
This 1979 example is quite well preserved, with only the knobs and strap buttons replaced over the years. The original T-Top humbuckers are a triumph of double-coil tone, and perhaps most importantly, you don’t have to look at the thing if you’re playing it."
